Being fit and healthy is more than just the amount you move or the food you put in your mouth. There is a complex array of different elements that all work together to make a fit and healthy body and mind. Not understanding this concept often results in bad decisions when it comes to health and fitness. In reality, our bodies are very simple. Their needs can be met with ease; you just have to know what those needs are. Here we consider some of the most important components of overall wellbeing.

Food and Drink

Most fitness experts agree that diet makes up for about 80% of weight loss and weight control. Food should be your key concern, something you think about every time you make the decision to eat. But, eating well doesn’t just mean eating less and eliminating everything you enjoy eating. In fact, treating your diet this way often has negative results. Instead, it’s best to look for balance in your diet.  To do this, you could use online resources to help figure out exactly how much of each nutrient you need. From there, you can develop a meal plan to take care of your nutritional needs throughout the day. Or, you could look into options like Huel. These meal delivery systems are great for those who don’t have the time or energy to prepare healthy meals.

Changing the way you eat will be paramount to your success. You need to form healthy new habits and stay away from things like junk food, fast food and highly processed foods. Adaptability will also help you when it comes to eating out. At some point you are sure to eat out, but navigating the choices at restaurants to find healthy options can be difficult, so look at the menu first. Choose something healthy and go with that in mind. Resist the urge to throw caution to the wind and return to your old eating habits by indulging in fried food, creamy sauces and sugary desserts.

Many dieters incorporate cheat days. A cheat day is a day where you can eat anything you like, within reason, after several days of eating healthy. Unfortunately, this approach can lead to the return of bad habits and weaken willpower. With the power to grant yourself a day without clean eating, you will find that it’s much easier to skip healthy food and opt for junk. Instead of a designated cheat day, go ahead and indulge yourself occasionally; eat that piece of cake on your birthday or have an order of fries when eating out with friends. Just make sure these occasions are few and far between and you don’t give up on your healthy goals.

Exercise and activity

Second only to diet is exercise and physical activity when it comes to weight control. Our bodies need regular physical activity to promote healthy growth and normal bodily functions. Lack of exercise causes feelings of lethargy, bloating, stress and may even impact your ability to concentrate. For these reasons, you should be doing some form of exercise throughout each day. Of course, you don’t have to hit the gym or do intense cardio each and every day. But, you should aim to walk at least a mile or so. Cardio exercise, which is good for your cardiovascular health, won’t require as much recovery time compared to lifting weights. So, it’s good to do cardio each day. If you wish to add a weight training regimen (which you should for optimal bone health); you should stagger the days.

Keeping motivated to exercise each day is often difficult. But, with the right motivation it is easy to keep going to the gym. One idea is the buddy system. It’s much harder to let someone else down than it is to let yourself down. You will be less likely to cancel your gym time when you have someone planning to join you. Having a buddy also gives you someone to compare results with and kindle some healthy competition. This is a great way to stay motivated.

Your body grows and changes in response to exercise. As you use them, your muscles actually become damaged, but this helps them grow stronger. The process of getting fit is very similar in that your cardiovascular system grows stronger to accommodate strenuous activity. It’s impossible to be fit without some form of exercise; as it’s the only way to ensure that your body is improving and strengthening.

Medical Health

Next is your general medical health. Your health and fitness are tied to each another. When you get ill, your body uses a lot of its resources to fight the ailment. This makes it very hard for your body’s systems to perform optimally. It’s also easy to skip exercise when you are feeling under the weather. But some health conditions can be almost unnoticeable. For this reason, it’s critical that you schedule regular doctor visits, at least every six months or so. This is enough to notice differences in your health before they become a major medical issue. Making sure you’re healthy is a huge part of staying that way; in fact, your doctor can suggest ways to boost your immune system so the chances of getting sick are less likely.

Pay attention to how you look and feel. Your body has loads of warning signs in place to let you know when something is wrong. Pain is the biggest of these. But, sometimes, the warning is a bit more subtle. Any time you sense a change, it’s best to visit a doctor as soon as possible. Don’t wait until an issue becomes more serious before seeking help. This is the way to avoid major complications.

Other Small Considerations

There are several other things which affect your health and fitness. One of the biggest is sleep. Sleep is essential to your health as it gives your body downtime in which to repair and refresh. Without enough sleep, your body and your mind don’t perform at their optimal levels. Plus, being tired will make it harder for you to be motivated to exercise. It’s advised that most people get about seven to nine hours of sleep each night.

Stress is another important factor in wellness. Working too much, worrying, or overtaxing yourself for long periods of time can put a lot of strain on your body. This can cause joint problems, headaches, bad temper and other physical and mental ailments. Stress also causes your body to produce cortisol and make it harder to achieve a healthy weight and maintain it.

Hopefully, this post will inspire you to start working harder on your health and fitness. Start now, keep at it and over time you are sure to experience a significant and positive change.
